Introduction
The proposed Nakcheristan Embankment Storage Dam Project is located in Nakcheristan Village, Qadis District, Badghis Province. The project belongs to and will primarily benefit the people of Nakcheristan Village and the surrounding communities.
The project area is highly dependent on seasonal rainfall and surface runoff. During periods of intense rainfall, substantial amounts of runoff flow through the area and are largely lost, while also creating risks of flash flooding and erosion. The construction of the Nakcheristan Embankment Storage Dam is therefore intended to capture and store rainfall runoff for beneficial use during dry periods, particularly for domestic purpose, irrigation and agricultural activities.
The dam will also help regulate runoff, reduce the impacts of sudden flooding, and improve the availability and management of water resources for the local community.
Nature of Contract:
Floods are among the most significant natural hazards affecting the Nakcheristan watershed and surrounding areas, particularly during periods of seasonal rainfall. Heavy seasonal rainfall generates substantial surface runoff, much of which is rapidly lost downstream without being stored for later use. This creates both flood risks during the rainy season and serious water shortages during the dry season, particularly for domestic water needs.
Nakcheristan Village, located in Qadis District of Badghis Province, is one of the communities facing significant climate-related and development challenges. The local population primarily depends on agriculture and livestock production for their livelihoods. However, the community also faces limited access to reliable and sufficient water for domestic purposes, especially during the dry season. The lack of adequate water storage infrastructure prevents the community from effectively capturing and utilizing the seasonal rainfall runoff available in the area.
During the rainy season, substantial quantities of rainfall runoff flow through the watershed and are largely lost. In addition to creating flash-flood risks, uncontrolled runoff can cause soil erosion and damage agricultural land and community infrastructure. At the same time, the community experiences water shortages during dry periods because there is insufficient capacity to store the rainfall runoff for later use.
In response to these challenges, ACRP has proposed the construction of the Nakcheristan Embankment Storage Dam in Nakcheristan Village. The primary purpose of the project is to capture and store seasonal rainfall runoff to improve the availability of water for domestic use, particularly during dry periods. The stored water will provide the community with a more reliable water source and help reduce the vulnerability of households to seasonal water shortages.
As secondary benefits, the stored water may also support agricultural and irrigation activities, where appropriate, and the dam will help regulate uncontrolled runoff and reduce the risks associated with flash floods and erosion. The project will therefore contribute to improved water security, protection of community assets, and greater resilience to seasonal rainfall variability and climate-related hazards.
The construction of the Nakcheristan Embankment Storage Dam is therefore urgently needed to capture and store seasonal rainfall runoff primarily for domestic water use, while also providing additional benefits for agriculture, flood-risk reduction, and sustainable local water-resource management.
The construction of these structures will irrigate many hectares of agricultural land. Under this RFQ, the major work includes the following items:
1. Construction of Embankment storage dam with capacity of 140293.776 Cum.
2. Construction of a spillway
The completion of all the above construction items includes the following activities:
1. Excavation for embankment storage dam and spillway, including disposal of surplus materials and dewatering where required.
2. Compacted backfilling of core materials.
3. Compacted backfilling of shell materials.
4. Compaction of dumped rock and downstream rockfill.
5. Gravelling for spillway side walls and upstream and downstream areas.
6. Placement, and compaction of filter and gravel drain materials for Zones 2A and 2B.
7. Plain Cement Concrete (PCC) M150 for foundations and other specified works.
8. PCC M200 Curb Stone Blocks, including installation, finishing, curing, Joint Pointing, and Painting.
9. Placement, leveling, watering, and compaction of granular sub-base on the embankment crest.
10. Random rubble stone masonry with 1:3 cement-sand mortar.
11. Pointing of stone masonry walls with 1:3 cement-sand mortar.
