We seek to appoint a fixed term Locum Consultant Paediatrician until the end of February 2026. A special interest in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine would be beneficial to the department however, all special interests would be welcomed. The successful candidate will work alongside 14 Consultant Paediatricians as part of a welcoming and enthusiastic team providing care to the children and families of Herefordshire and the surrounding areas.The department offers first class paediatric medicine within a supportive friendly team and delivers a comprehensive range of services. A good general paediatric and neonatal background is the priority and practical skills are essential. The post is based at Hereford County Hospital in the City of Hereford there may be some peripheral clinics in the surrounding market towns.This post attracts 10PA’s and an on-call supplement of 5%.Main duties of the jobo To provide, with Consultant colleagues, general paediatric and neonatal services within Wye Valley NHS Trust for the prevention, diagnosis and management of illness and the proper functioning of the department.o To participate in the Consultant of the Week (CoW) (2.2 PA) and twilight (1.3 PA) rota. The Consultant of the Week is responsible for all the patients seen by the paediatric team for a consecutive period Monday – Thursday or Friday – Sunday, the week is split to provide better work-life balance. The Consultant of the Week will have no other routine commitments such as clinics. The twilight consultant works evening shifts Mondays – Fridays so that the CoW finishes their shift at 5.00pm.To participate in the resident 12 hour shift night rota (4 nights per 10 week cycle) (1.9 PA). There is a rest day provided directly before and after each night shift.To participate in the 1 in 10 non-resident on call rota (0.37 PA).To perform urgent (acute) Child Safeguarding Medicals when the concern is in the category of physical abuse. Education & Qualifications
Essential

• Full doctors GMC registration with licence to practise
• MBBS or equivalent
• MRCPCH (by examination) or equivalent

Desirable

• Higher Degree (BSc, MSc, MD, PhD)

Experience & Knowledge
Essential

• Competent to work without direct supervision
• Training and experience in general paediatrics (minimum 3 years at middle grade level)
• APLS or equivalent (within past 4 years)
• Training and experience in neonatology (minimum 1 year, of which 6 months in a level 3 unit)
• Up to date competence in practical skills in neonatology
• NLS or equivalent (within past 4 years)
• Training and experience in Community Paediatrics (6 months at ST4 level or equivalent)
• Training and experience in child safeguarding, with Level 3 safeguarding training in past 12 months
• Area of experience or special interest in diabetes +/- endocrinology
• Appropriate progression of career to date
• Communication skills (ability to build rapport, listen, persuade, negotiate & counsel families in difficult circumstances) including clear written and spoken English

Management
Essential

• Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and supervise juniors
• Ability to effectively organise, prioritise and manage clinical workload
• Ability to work to overcome barriers to change (negotiating, influencing and persuasion skills)
• Awareness of Service Development issues
• Commitment to further develop the post and the service provided
• Experience of leading teams and awareness of leadership styles.
• Evidence of management and administration experience.

Desirable

• Understanding of wider health agenda and modern NHS
• Knowledge and understanding of clinical governance issues
• Management training on an accredited course

Audit/Quality improvement
Essential

• Effective participation in and a commitment to clinical audit
• Participation in a quality improvement programme

Desirable

• Undergone training in teaching and willingness to organise relevant audit activities including quality improvement evidence
• Completion of formal courses in Audit and quality improvement

Research
Essential

• Understanding and interest in research
• Ability to appraise research critically
• Ability to supervise juniors undertaking research projects
• Evidence of recent research and development activity

Desirable

• Publications in nationally and internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals on subjects relevant to the specialty

Teaching
Essential

• Experience of and a commitment to training/ teaching undergraduate and postgraduates
• Appraisal and assessment skills
• Ability to assess clinical competencies
• Enthusiastic and ability to inspire and lead others

Desirable

• Willingness to develop new approaches to teaching.
• Post Graduate qualification in teaching and training. Academic experience relevant to working within a University teaching hospital and current metabolic research
