The latest major initiative continuing to deliver on this track record is through the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS).As a magnet for innovation in advanced manufacturing, the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) group of specialist R&D centres, supports manufacturing, engineering and associated tech businesses of all sizes, to thrive domestically and internationally through accelerating productivity, embracing new digital technologies and achieving net-zero targets.Ultimately, we are growing the economy, developing a vibrant and skilled talent pool and helping create prosperous, sustainable communities.The AIM Team supports NMIS technology centres (Advanced Forming Research Centre, Lightweight Manufacturing Centre and the Digital Factory) in their use of AI, machine learning and data science in industry-focused projects. Inspired by demand from those industrial use-cases, we also undertake more fundamental research into the use of AI/ML techniques in the modelling of industrial products, their physical behaviour, manufacturing processes and supply chains, in collaboration with academic research programmes in The University of Strathclyde’s Industrial AI Cluster. We also work closely with the NMIS Manufacturing Skills Academy developing and delivering teaching materials that upskill manufacturers’ workforces to bridge the industrial skills gap in Data Science and AI.As a Research Assistant, you will assist in the delivery of the research activities as part of a team, working under the general supervision of senior colleagues. You will conduct literature reviews, develop questionnaires, conduct surveys, collect and collate data, and undertake and record the outcomes of experiments. You will manage and prioritise your own workload and ensure that all activities are completed to deadlines and you will write up the results of your own research and contribute to the production of research reports and publications. You will input as a team member to administrative activities and assist, where required, with relevant teaching and knowledge exchange activities.To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of Degree level in an appropriate discipline, and you will have sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge in AI, Machine Learning and their application in industry. You will have knowledge of appropriate research methods, have an ability to plan and prioritise your own workload, with general supervision, and you will have an ability to work within a team environment. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences.Whilst not essential for the role, applications are welcomed from candidates with: a higher Degree in a relevant discipline, some relevant work experience, membership/working towards membership of a relevant Chartered/professional body (including the Higher Education Academy), experience of relevant student supervision and teaching activities and experience of knowledge exchange related activities.Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to Andy Sherlock, Director of Data Driven Manufacturing ( ).£31,396 to £34,980 per annum
