Position
Applicants are invited to apply for a Research Associate position with the Translating Research in Elder Care (TREC) research program situated at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. TREC is a pan-Canadian and international longitudinal health services and knowledge translation program of applied research situated in long term care (LTC) homes. TREC maintains a cohort of 60-100 homes depending on phase and has a world-class database that has been running continuously for 17 years. Reporting to the TREC Scientific Director, the Research Associate will design a process to test a system level indicator of care quality in LTC homes. Proof of concept work suggests the existing algorithm may be usable as a kind of system indicator to detect perturbations in quality in the health system. Using provincial RAI-MDS 2.0 data the Research Associate will first validate the algorithm in provincial data and the work with senior investigators and government to evaluate its utility on a going forward basis, i.e., in real time. If successful the indicator will point to system fluctuations that merit further investigation, earlier than would normally be possible.
Duties
The Research Associate will be responsible for:
• Validate the existing indicator algorithm using multiple years of retrospective RAI-MDS 2.0 data
• Adjust the algorithm if necessary
• Develop a model a model for working with senior policy and system managers
• Lead a series of meetings with senior policy and system managers over a two year period to assess whether the indicator has strong usability with end users.
• All project functions:
• Development and maintenance of detailed project timelines, milestones and deliverables.
• Ethics applications and amendments
• All budget activities including regular reports
• Maintenance of detailed micro data documentation and detailed meta data for the project
• Develop tailored dissemination strategies and packaging of the indicator system for users
• Chairing regular team meetings
• Preparation of webinars and reports for stakeholders and funders
• Scientific outputs: conference and other presentations, scientific publications
• Supporting 1-2 trainees to work on the project
• Perform other research and administrative duties as required
Qualifications
• PhD in Nursing
• Completion of at least 1 year of a post doc
• Experience working in LTC homes
• Experience with large data bases, specifically, RAI-MDS 2.0
• Must be an experienced SAS user
• Strong data visualization skills
• Experience working with policy makers
• Superior project management skills
• Superior written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work with a high degree of independence and initiative
• Ability to make and adhere to self-imposed timelines
• Must be able to work with a high degree of independence and experience must reflect that
