Research Fellow (108902-0324)

We’ve got an thrilling alternative within the Faculty of Engineering to contribute to the event of revolutionary and sustainable low carbon plastic waste administration and recycling options.

The Mission

The Rubbish In-value Out (GIVO) is £1.5m challenge funded by FCDO with the purpose of lowering environmental air pollution brought on by plastic waste and creating sustainable plastic waste administration and recycling options in Nigeria. That is an interdisciplinary challenge with a number of key worldwide stakeholders. The GIVO Mission focuses on creating digital instruments and infrastructure to determine decentralized, community-based plastic waste administration and recycling options in Nigeria. The challenge commenced in 2022, and as of the present date, GIVO recycling centres have been established in Lagos and Abuja, Nigeria. Our GIVO centres concentrate on gathering, sorting, and mechanically recycling post-consumer municipal plastic waste. They’ve already made a big contribution to lowering environmental air pollution brought on by plastic and enhancing useful resource effectivity.

Our goal is to leverage digital applied sciences and ICT to develop a monitoring and tracing system for plastic all through the worth chain, digitize plastic waste administration processes, create a sturdy spatial and temporal database on plastic waste, and consider GHG emissions and conduct a Life-Cycle Evaluation (LCA) for the administration and recycling of municipal plastic waste.

Your Position

On this challenge you’ll develop novel algorithms and strategies for evaluation of plastic knowledge collected from the GIVO Centres, together with knowledge collected on waste arising, plastic assortment, sorting, mechanical recycling, and off-takers. The principal focus will probably be to develop digital instruments that may robustly and mechanically extract and analyse data/datasets about post-consumer municipal plastic waste administration. You’ll examine GHG emissions and carry out an LCA for GIVO plastic waste administration and recycling options with the goal of enhancing the sustainability of GIVO answer and lowering the footprint of plastic waste administration. Additionally, you will work collaboratively with the challenge companions primarily based within the UK and Nigeria to use and check these new instruments to make essential advances in producing detailed datasets on plastic waste journey from assortment to recycling and reuse, enhancing and scaling of the GIVO answer. In the long term we hope this work will help and inform efforts to develop sturdy options, methods, and insurance policies to facilitate transitioning in direction of a Round Plastic Financial system (CPE) within the sub-Saharan Africa area.

For casual enquiries, please contact Dr Soroush Abolfathi, Principal Investigator of the GIVO challenge ([email protected] ).
