Research Fellow in Anaerobic Fermentation

Applications are invited for Research Fellow position within the School of Engineering at the University of Southampton, working with the BBSRC-funded Environmental Biotechnology Innovation Centre ( ). The work will involve laboratory-based development of mixed-culture fermentation of un-sterilised putrescible organic wastes using engineering biology and bioprocess engineering tools. This includes manipulating or modifying specific microbes in a consortium to increase interactions and enhance metabolic output by redirecting metabolic fluxes to maximise efficiency; and/or designing robust consortia with high tolerance for different types of environmental stress through adaptive laboratory evolution, along with knowledge of high-throughput analysis to understand community dynamics. The results will be written up as project deliverables and publications.The post will be held in the Environmental Lab of University of Southampton, with close collaboration with leading researchers in other institutions especially Cranfield University. Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.The appointment is for a 2-year fixed period, ideally starting in June 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.
