Introduction
Under the prevention pillar of this project, the project aims to do targeted awareness programmes with specific vulnerable groups with the aim of deterring offenders and spreading awareness on the rights and entitlements of victims/survivors of SGBV. To this end, this intervention seeks to engage in a discourse with university students on the structural and systemic nature of such violence. There is a lack of actionable data and qualitative information about/status of SGBV experiences by young populations – particularly those at risk due to being in spaces where SGBV is prevalent or due to sexual orientation, identity or preference – from having safe spaces to share their experiences, voice their concerns or find empathetic mechanisms to receive support. Similarly, there is a lack of understanding about the systemic and structural nature of gender norms, attitudes, practices and behaviour by service providers and institutions which become barriers to creating a conducive environment for SGBV prevention and pathways to justice claims. The selections of university spaces for this intervention allows for accessing youth populations from ethno-religious, socio-economic, geographically diverse groups can be found in a controlled environment and safe space.
Objective;
Objective 1: To conduct a research study on the prevalence of SGBV among university students and identify the structural barriers and socio-cultural challenges in creating safer spaces for victim-survivors
Objective 2: To engage university-age youth groups in creating awareness of the SGBV landscape through exhibitions and facilitated discussions based on the oral histories of women’s experiences with SGBV
Objective 3: To capacitate a minimum of 75 university students (25 per university), particularly in social work, public health, law, and psychology, with the tools to effectively engage in SGBV prevention, enhance service delivery, and create safer spaces for justice.
