Royal College of General Practitioners

Salary Band CL, £51,000 per annum

The Royal College of General Practitioners is the professional membership body for family
doctors in the UK and overseas and we are committed to improving patient care, clinical
standards and GP training. Our 54,000 members are at the heart of everything we do, as we
support GPs through all stages of their career, from medical students through to training,
qualified years and retirement. As a charity, the College’s purpose is to encourage, foster and
maintain the highest possible standards in general medical practice. We have a workforce of
around 280 employees, skilled and committed to delivering to our members and stakeholders

The Climate and Ecological Emergency poses a threat not only to the future of the planet but to
our health and NHS too. Greener general practice can improve health outcomes, decrease workload
and reduce health inequalities. The College has an important role in supporting members and
general practice in delivering a critical strand of the NHS’s target of net zero and addressing
the wider holistic issues encompassed by planetary health.

Responding to the climate emergency is a priority for the College in our new strategy for
2023-26 and this is an exciting new role to enable us to deliver. We are looking to drive
impact within the College’s own operations as well as across the broader primary healthcare
landscape. As postholder, you will work as a strategic partner and trusted advisor with
stakeholders across the organisation to co-ordinate development of delivery roadmaps and KPIs
to measure our progress. You will promote initiatives and cross-team learning to improve
visibility and awareness of our activity and impact.

Your expertise and experience in climate and planetary health will guide the College in
targeting limited resources to where we can drive most impact. You will build strong working
relationships with colleagues, senior management and members to understand if, and influence
how, sustainability considerations can be prioritised across our activity.

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Have worked successfully in a senior role within a sustainability function in a medium or
    large organisation.
  • Be passionate about sustainability and have the energy to create and drive change
  • Have demonstrable knowledge of sustainability matters and how businesses are addressing the
    challenges
  • Have experience of running a cross-organisational delivery process of a diverse project,
including effective reporting of progress using relevant metrics
  • Have excellent stakeholder management skills through effective communication, influencing
and negotiating at an individual and team level

The successful candidate will share our corporate values. In return, the College offers
excellent terms and conditions.

If you feel that this role is the next step in your career, we would like to hear from you.
