Background

The Sustainability team is responsible for the management and improvement of institutional
sustainability, including environmental monitoring and compliance. As part of the Property and
Facilities department, the team collaborate with colleagues across Professional Services and
the Schools to embed sustainability in the University’s activities. The team works across all
areas of environmental and social sustainability, using the United Nations Global Goals for
Sustainable Development as a framework. 

Responsibilities

Working independently, the Sustainability Officer acts as institutional lead on a range of
sustainability initiatives. You will be responsible for maintaining the environmental
management system (EMS) documentation and records, conducting internal EMS audits and
developing associated policies, in line with internal stakeholder requirements. You will
contribute to the development and delivery of the Sustainability Strategy and operational (e.g.
waste, energy, travel) and engagement (e.g. staff, students and external stakeholders)
activities, which align with and support the University’s strategy. 

Person specification

The successful candidate will have experience working across a range of environmental and
sustainability issues within a large and complex organisation. They will be passionate and
knowledgeable about sustainability and its context within a business environment. The
individual will need to be highly motivated and organised, with the ability to manage their
workload across competing priorities. Excellent team work and communication skills will be
essential for this role and the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate both their
analytical thinking and creativity, as the situation requires.
